The art of Shiatsu, which literally means “finger pressure” in Japanese, is a medicinal massage that utilizes various forms of pressure and stretching to relieve pain. It originates from concepts of traditional Chinese medicine, which hold that illness is a result of imbalances in the body’s energy (also known as ‘qi’, pronounced ‘chee’). Shiatsu practitioners highly recommend this form of massage for both relaxation purposes and relieving chronic tension or pain in the muscles. Shiatsu is mainly limited to these purposes, however, as it has not been scientifically proven to treat diseases.
