Calistoga
Mineral Water Calistoga is the home of world famous
Calistoga Mineral Water which comes from a source deep
in the earth below Calistoga, a historic town of 1,800 people
in verdant Napa Valley, California. For hundreds of years
the Wappo Indians traveled to the source to soak in the hot
mineral pools. The Wappo tribe called the region "Tu-la-halusi...land
of health-giving springs." They enjoyed the water mixed
with the juice of fruit and berries that grew so abundantly
in the valley. By the time of the California gold rush, an
entrepreneur named Sam Brannan had developed Calistoga into
a resort, forever making "Calistoga" synonymous
with good health. The town got its name, the story goes, when
Brannan claimed he would make the town the Saratoga of California;
only it came out "the Calistoga of Sarifornia."
Giuseppe Musante owned a soda fountain and candy store in Calistoga
called The Railway Exchange where he sold ice cream, sodas, phosphates
and other delicacies. In 1920, while drilling for a cold water well
at The Railway Exchange, Musante tapped into a hot water geyser that
blew him off his scaffold and burned him so badly he had to be hospitalized.
Guiseppe had discovered the Calistoga geyser.
Musante sold the mineral water from the geyser as well as a number of
soft drinks out of his soda fountain until 1924, when he set up a bottling
line and began selling Calistoga Sparkling Mineral Water.
In 1980 the company was sold to the Perrier Group of America, the parent
of Great Spring Waters of America. Under the new Perrier ownership,
the Calistoga Mineral Water Company advanced to the next step and introduced
flavored Calistoga Sparkling Water in 1983. In 1987 Calistoga Sparkling
Mineral Water and fruit juice was brought to consumers who were ready
for these all natural beverages. In 1990, Calistoga introduced a line
of mountain spring water products, and in 1995, introduced home and
office delivery service.
Sales of Calistoga natural beverages exceeded all expectations and continued
to do so much to the amazement of the more traditional beverage manufacturers.
The age of new age beverages was sweeping the country, and the Calistoga
Mineral Water Company and the Perrier Group were at the forefront of
this exciting new beverage category. In 1992, Nestle purchased the Perrier
Group. Calistoga remains the leading brand in the western United States,
and will continue to innovate and grow with products of superior quality
into the new century.
A Unique Mineral Water Source Calistoga's geothermal source is a uniquely
important factor in safeguarding water quality. Natural forces heat
the mineral water to the boiling point; to be bottled it must be cooled
to 36 degrees Fahrenheit.
Geothermal rock strata give Calistoga its own mineral base. Not only
does Calistoga mineral water help restore a fluid base, but its minerals
add a distinctive, refreshing taste.
Calistoga's quality is guarded through its protected source, sophisticated
monitoring, adherence to government regulations and durable packaging
